Applications of reinforcement particles in the fabrication of Aluminium Metal Matrix Composites by Friction Stir Processing - A Review

Composite materials possess advantages like high strength and stiffness with low density prove their essentiality in the aviation sector. Aluminium metal matrix composites (AMMC) find applications automotive, aircraft, marine industries due to specific strength, superior wear resistance, lower thermal expansion. The fabrication of using liquid phase at temperature leads formation intermetallics unwanted phases. Friction Stir Processing (FSP) is a novel technique composite fabrication, below melting point matrix, achieving good grain refinement. Many researchers reported enhancement mechanical, microstructure, tribological properties AMMC produced by FSP route. parameters such as tool rotational speed, traverse speeds are found be having greater impact on uniform dispersion particles. It observed that tensile hardness, corrosion altered processes, scale alterations influenced significantly processing parameters. strengthening mechanisms responsible for discussed this paper. Advanced engineering shape memory alloys, entropy MAX reinforcement material also discussed. Challenges opportunities manufacture summarized, providing great benefit working technique.
